Meet the Team

Kerry Toolan, Principal

From the moment Kerry walked through the doors of the public radio station on her college campus, she devoted her career to the nonprofit sector. In fact, one business coach told Kerry that she was “genetically engineered” to be a nonprofit professional. Throughout her 30+ year career she specialized in advancement and strategic leadership in a variety of areas including public and private education, the arts, museums, performing arts, and community organizations.

Kerry has been a continuous student of the nonprofit world. Early in her career she was trained by the legendary Jerry Panas and other innovators who shaped the advancement profession. While pursuing a Master’s Degree, her business acumen was influenced by the philosophies of Peter F. Drucker, the father of modern business management.

Over the decades she applied and adapted her experience to lead change, strengthen organizations, expand donor pipelines, grow revenue, and yield results. She specialized in creating organizational infrastructure; launching capital campaigns, major gifts initiatives and planned giving programs; strategic planning; and board development. Her expertise also strengthened organizational capacity through managing annual fund campaigns, membership programs, and planning and implementing six- and seven-figure fundraising events. 

In addition to her master’s degree in Arts and Cultural Management from the Peter F. Drucker School of Management at Claremont Graduate University, Kerry is a Certified Specialist in Planned Giving from the American Institute for Philanthropic Studies at CSU, Long Beach. Kerry’s current passion is helping nonprofit leaders thrive and mitigate burnout. Her combined skills as an Arbinger Institute trainer in Developing and Implementing an Outward Mindset, productivity training as a Full Focus Certified Pro, and certification as a Motivation Coach served Kerry well throughout her career and that’s why she’s the Burnout Busting Coach!

John Toolan, Principal

John is an interview and recruiting expert. For over 30 years he has engaged in hiring practices, with the past 25 years focused exclusively on recruiting. John earned his Certified Diversity and Inclusion Recruiter designation through AIRS (an ADP company). 

His passion for interviewing originated when he applied for his first professional job. He was nervous, did not know what to expect, and had little relevant work experience for the role. He left the interview convinced he did not get the job (but he did). 

That level of uncertainty caused by feeling unprepared for the interview was something he did not want to experience again. As such, he set out to learn the “game” of interviewing – learning the rules, mastering the techniques, and being better prepared than any other candidate.  

The art and the science of interviewing have remained his passion for his entire career. Over the decades, he has helped many professionals on both sides of the desk excel throughout the interview process. As a nonprofit leader and recruiter, he has conducted thousands of interviews and has identified patterns and common errors made by interviewers and interviewees across multiple industries. 

John has coached a wide range of individuals, from those seeking their first job, to individuals seeking a career transition, to leaders securing C-suite positions. Additionally, he has guided HR departments and hiring committees in developing an interview flow that attracts and retains exceptional individuals and makes the candidate selection process smooth.
